Aelita
The PeripheralAelita is an absent but consequential figure whose residence becomes a focal point in the investigation into her apparent murder. The account of her death is entangled with a false identity: the body witnessed by Flynne was a bespoke peripheral, and the island’s memorials commemorated the person that peripheral had pretended to be.
Identity and the Island’s Memorial
Aelita’s name is connected to a death staged through a carefully constructed substitute. Lowbeer explains that the peripheral Flynne saw die had been present for only a few days. It was made with a complete genome, a full complement of organs, and fingerprints, giving it the formal forensic signatures required for a legal death. The island’s history assigned that death to an imaginary figure rather than to the person whose identity the substitute concealed.
The deception extended beyond the one peripheral. Its predecessor had most likely been weighted and dropped into the water column, where assemblers would consume it. Aelita’s immediate cohort had not known the hidden identity or the earlier substitution. After the Americans killed the cohort, the survivors’ memorialization of the false figure made the fiction part of the island’s history.
Residence and Investigation
Aelita’s residence was identified as an apartment on the fifty-sixth floor of Edenmere Mansions in Farringdon. It was also the place Burton had been assigned to watch, and the location where Flynne had apparently seen Aelita murdered. The convergence of surveillance, Flynne’s testimony, and the false forensic trail made the residence a concrete point of contact between the investigation and the mystery of who had actually died.
The evidence distinguishes Aelita’s presence at the island’s beginnings from her later absence. Lowbeer says that Hamed al-Habib had been present at the start, with the initial flotilla and perhaps during the cannibalism, but that the peripheral Flynne saw was only a recent arrival. This account separates the long history attributed to the island’s memorialized figure from the short period in which the substitute appeared there.
Identification and Unresolved Fate
Lowbeer’s plan for the gathering in Edenmere Mansions was designed to obtain an identification while keeping a masquerade intact. Wilf Netherton was to attend with Dr. Annie Courrèges, who would be present peripherally and would attempt to act as a neoprimitive curator. She was there to identify someone, but Lowbeer wanted the disguise to remain viable as long as possible in case recognition did not occur as soon as she entered.
The evidence establishes the staged death and the mistaken memorial, but it does not establish Aelita’s ultimate fate. Her residence and the substitute’s legal-death construction sharpen the investigation without resolving what happened to Aelita herself.
